The curriculum

Six courses, beginner to owner.

Each course stacks on the last — from understanding your own hair, through color and scalp health, all the way to filling a chair and running a salon. Take one, or the whole path.

Who's teaching

Learn from someone who still
does the work.

Every Mane Academy course is written by a stylist with real years on the floor — cutting, coloring, building a book, and eventually a business. These aren't recycled textbook chapters; they're the things we wish someone had handed us on day one.

The result is education that's honest about what's hard, specific about what works, and ruthless about cutting everything that doesn't.

01 Foundations

Know Your Hair

Before any product or tool makes sense, you have to understand the hair you've got — how it grows, why it frizzes, breaks, or won't hold a curl. Start here, whoever you are.

  • How hair actually grows — and what speeds it up or shuts it down
  • Find your real hair type: curl pattern, density, and porosity, and what each one needs
  • Why your hair misbehaves — frizz, breakage, oiliness, flatness — decoded
  • Reading an ingredient label without a chemistry degree
  • Building a simple routine around your hair, not someone else's

02 Home Care

Wash, Style & Protect

The everyday craft most people get wrong. Wash, dry, and heat-style so your hair looks salon-fresh without the salon — and stops taking damage in the first place.

  • How to wash and condition for your hair type (it's rarely what the bottle says)
  • Heat styling without the damage — blow-dry, straighten, curl, and protect
  • Everyday styles that actually hold, from the desk to a night out
  • Repair vs. prevent: what genuinely fixes damaged hair and what's just marketing
  • A weekly routine that keeps hair healthy between cuts

03 Color

Color & Balayage

Color is chemistry plus art — whether you do your own at home or build it into a service. Master tone and formulation, and paint balayage that grows out soft instead of brassy.

  • The color wheel and tone — neutralize brass without guessing
  • Formulating color: developer, ratios, and timing that actually work
  • Hand-painted balayage and the lived-in, low-maintenance grow-out
  • Coloring at home safely — and knowing when to leave it to a pro
  • Fixing the usual mistakes: brass, bands, and uneven color

04 Scalp

Scalp Health & Hair Loss

Healthy hair starts at the scalp — and most thinning has a cause you can do something about. Learn to read your scalp, treat what's treatable, and know when to see a professional.

  • Reading the scalp: dryness, buildup, irritation — and what each one means
  • The real causes of shedding and thinning, and which ones respond to treatment
  • Treatments and ingredients that move the needle (and the hype that doesn't)
  • Building a scalp routine that actually supports growth
  • Red flags that mean it's time to see a dermatologist or trichologist

Turn Hair Into Income

The pivot from doing hair to getting paid for it. Land your first clients, build a name on social, and price your work so a passion turns into real, repeatable income.

  • From hobby to paid — landing your first clients the right way
  • Instagram and TikTok that book appointments, not just likes
  • Pricing your work for profit — and raising rates without losing people
  • Rebooking and referrals: turn one client into a standing calendar
  • The simple setup to run it like a real business from day one

06 Scale · Premium

The Salon Business Playbook

Going from a full calendar to running the floor. Leases, staffing, retail margins, and the numbers that decide whether a hair business scales or stalls.

  • Opening a space: lease, build-out, licensing, and a realistic startup budget
  • Booth-rent vs. commission vs. employees — the model that fits, with the math
  • Hiring and keeping the people who'd otherwise leave
  • Retail and inventory: turning the shelf into real profit
  • Scaling past one chair — second location, brand, and systems

Questions

Asked, often.

Don't see your question here? Email us at hello@maneacademy.com — a real person reads it, usually within a day.

Do I need any experience to start?
No. Course 01 — Know Your Hair — assumes zero background and builds from hair biology up. The curriculum is sequenced so each course earns its place on top of the last, but you're free to jump to the one that matches where you are right now.
What format are the courses in?
Each course is a focused, printable PDF field manual — the kind you keep open on the station, not a 12-hour video you'll never finish. Practical, dense, and built to apply the next morning.
Do I need to be a hair professional?
Not at all. The early courses are written for anyone who wants better hair — their own — with zero background assumed. The later ones go pro: building clients, pricing, running a salon. Take only the ones that fit where you are. (They build real skill, but aren't a substitute for state-board cosmetology hours if you're chasing a license.)
Can I buy just one course?
Absolutely. Every course stands on its own. Many stylists start with the one that fixes their biggest current bottleneck — cutting, color, or filling the chair — and come back for the rest.
How do I get the course after I buy?
Delivery is instant — the moment checkout completes, your PDF lands in your inbox. It's yours to keep, print, and revisit for life.
About Mane Academy

Hair education, the way we
wish we'd been taught.

Mane Academy exists because most of us learned the hard way — piecing together skills from rushed mentors, blurry online clips, and a lot of expensive mistakes (on our own hair first, then our clients). We built the resource we wish we'd had back then.

Our mission

Take the mystery out of hair.

Good information gets you results — on your own hair, and on anyone else's. Our mission is to compress the years of trial and error that stand between confusion and confidence: whether you just want your hair to finally behave, or you're building it into a career.

We do that with a clear, stacked curriculum: six courses that move from understanding your own hair and everyday care, through color and scalp health, all the way to filling a book and running a salon. Buy one, or build the whole path. It's yours for life either way.

M
Lead instructor
15+ years behind the chair
Who's teaching

Fifteen years, every chair in the room.

Our lead instructor has spent over fifteen years in the industry — as a junior stylist learning to section, a colorist rescuing other people's mistakes, a top earner with a fully booked column, and finally a salon owner managing a team and a P&L.

That full arc is exactly why the courses work: each one is written from the inside of the problem it solves. (This bio is a placeholder — the client's real instructor profile drops in here later.)

What makes it different

Four things we won't compromise on.

01

Taught from the floor, not the page

Every technique we teach has been pressure-tested on real clients, on real timelines. If it doesn't hold up behind a busy chair, it doesn't make the course.

02

Dense, not long

We respect your time. No 14-hour video courses you'll never finish — just tight, printable field manuals you can read in an evening and apply the next morning.

03

Craft and business, together

Most hair education stops at technique and leaves you guessing about money. We teach both — because a brilliant cut means nothing if the chair sits empty.

04

Honest about what's hard

We don't pretend color corrections are easy or that opening a salon is painless. We tell you where it gets hard, then hand you the way through.
